On a recent shoot with Twosisters The Label, she shared her tips for creating flawless makeup looks that are easily incorporated into your makeup routine!
How To Create A Flawless Base
Samantha says that the secret to a flawless finish is a good skin base, which is achieved by a consistent skincare regime. So, ladies, invest in the time to find the right routine for your skin!
Make sure to prep your skin before going in with your foundation! Cleanse your skin to get rid of any dirt or grime, use a toner and finish off with a moisturiser.
Samantha explains that moisturiser is a non-negotiable to ensure that your foundation glides on to your skin. If your skin is a little dry, then go in with an oil before your moisturiser.
Samantha’s must have in her makeup kit?
The Face Hero by Go-To Skincare and Laneige Water Bank Moisture Cream.
She loves the Face Hero because it gives you an all-day glow underneath your foundation.
Makeup That Lasts All Day
For makeup that lasts all day and night, make sure to focus on your application. Even if you’re using products that are advertised as long lasting, it’s the application of those products that will ensure your makeup lasts as long as it needs to.
When applying your foundation, go in with a brush first and then use a beauty blender to push the product into your skin. This helps with the longevity of your makeup, but also absorbs any excess product so that your skin doesn’t look cakey. This technique also helps your skin look perfectly airbrushed.
Make sure to always set your base with a powder and setting spray!
Set your foundation with powder in areas where foundation settles, like smile lines and underneath your eyes. Baking is also great for longevity, but it can make your skin look dry, so Samantha doesn’t recommend baking for every day.
Her favourite powder to use is the Too Faced Born This Way Setting Powder because it’s so finely milled.
A setting spray is also essential for long lasting makeup and Samantha recommends the Iconic London Prep-Set-Glow spray.
Finally, if you want your makeup to last all day, don’t touch your face!
Dewy Glass Skin
Cream products are key in achieving this look.
Make sure to go in with an oil and moisturiser to prep your skin prior to makeup, for maximum sheen and hydration.
While a cream or liquid foundation would suit this look, Samantha highly recommends a tinted moisturiser instead for a less heavy look overall. Tinted moisturisers are ideal for that ‘I’m not wearing any makeup’ look.
Less is more when trying to achieve that dewy, glass skin finish. Instead of going in with a thick layer of foundation, spot conceal any problem areas so that your skin still looks like skin once you’re done!
My Lips But Better
Samantha’s trick to achieve that ‘My Lips But Better’ look?
Lip liner.
Go in with a lip liner that’s 1 or 2 shades darker than your natural lip colour. Shape your lips on the bottom and cupids bow and then blend the liner into your lips with your finger. To finish it off, go in with a gloss or lip balm on top.
By not using any lipstick, you’re focusing on creating fullness with the lip liner and allowing your natural lip colour to come through.
Samantha’s favourite products for this look are Subculture lip liner by MAC, Nude #1 by Bare Minerals and the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask.
The Perfect Red Lip
Samantha encourages a matte lipstick vs a glossy one if you’re planning on wearing a red lipstick.
A glossy finish isn’t as wearable because it transfers everywhere (try eating with glossy red lips!) and is very high maintenance compared to a matte finish.
Samantha prefers liquid lipsticks and her personal favourites are the Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Beso or Lime Crime Suedeberry, if you want a red lipstick with an orange undertone.
To achieve that perfectly crisp finish, line your lips with a sharp lip liner. So, make sure to sharpen those pencils before using them!
Blend the liner into your lips with your finger to soften the line slightly, then go in with a liquid lipstick to finish.
Voila! The perfect red lip!
